Perez Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2005

A nosnob.com favorite for sure. We first found this wine a couple of years ago in a Vintages release and it was love at first drop. We have been recommending it and buying it ever since. I got to meet the wine maker back in November. I might have made an “I’m an obsessed scary stalker fan” first impression. More on that another time. Now to the wine…
This is a big bold gutsy wine and it’s proud of it. Deep aromas and flavors of blackberry, chocolate, cherry. Just enough alcohol to warm the mouth and throat without being offensive. Get your butcher to cut you a perfect piece of moo and fire up the BBQ. Perez Cruz is coming to dinner.

    Sean,

You nailed this one, buddy! I just had a 1/2 bottle of this wine for lunch at a local Miami restaurant and was left wanting more. My meal consisted of roast suckling pig with moros (rice and black beans mixed) and maduros (fried seet plantains). Of course, the lechon (piglet) was doused in onions and garlic.

I have had many different Spanish, Italian, French and Napa Valley wines with this type of meal, but this Perez Cruz absolutely made that meal insanely good. It almost brought me to tears! The flavors did not buckle with either of the meals components, nor did it overpower them. This is one wine that will be a staple in my “fake” (read strange little refrigerator) urban wine cellar.

My wife does not like Cabernet Sauvignon at all. She fell in love with this wine, today as well, and contimplated having more. However, duty calls and we had to get back to work. I see a visit to this fine establishment will take place again tomorrow as they present the famous “Caja China” suckling pig (Basically a whole pig roasted in a box-like contraption, usually buried in the earth! Hey, don’t knock it! It is the sweetest and most moist pork you will ever have the privelege of consuming!).

    Cheers!

    Sean,

Any idea where I can find this wine to purchase (other than the restaurant) in Miami? I am coming up empty everywhere I turn.

    Cheers!

  3. I could not agree more. I was “late discovering” it two years ago but since then it has been the red wine of choice. For less than C$15 you get a wine that beats French and Italian wines considerably more expensive.

This was the best wine we have ever had. Unfortunately we only were able to have it twice. I have no longer been able to find it. The 2006 does not compare at all.
