Pietra Pura Mandus Primitivo di Manduria 2008

Date February 5, 2015 | Chuck | Italy & Primitivo & Red Wine

Not a red to be taken lightly. This wine is easily one of the most complex I've had for under twenty dollars. Most notable is this bottle's firm lingering tannins and nice peppery-blackberry finish.

Poderi Angelini Primitivo Di Manduria 2008

Date September 20, 2012 | Chuck | Italy & Primitivo & Red Wine

Easily the best Primitivo we've reviewed on this site. Extra dry, firm tannins and plenty of depth makes this a great match for fans of Italian reds and Italian food.
Special thanks to Nurse Nancy for the bottle! It was enjoyed with family and Sunday lunch.

Pasqua Volto Primitivo 2006

Date August 28, 2008 | Chuck | Italy & Primitivo & Red Wine

High five to all the tree-huggers out there, this is my first bottle of wine in a PET (plastic) bottle, and surprisingly I didn't hate it as much as I would have thought.  Although I wouldn't feel good about bringing a PET bottle as a hostess present, my favourite aspect of it was the smaller and lighter size of the bottle, while remaining to hold 750ml.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, although primitivo is genetically the same as zinfandel, it is not styled the same and doesn't hold a candle to a California Zin.  Maybe this skewed my option a bit due to the fact that I would love to find such a value priced zin, regardless, I found myself at a table with two others who thought the wine was quite nice.

Memoria Primitivo di Manduria 2004

Date April 2, 2008 | Chuck | Italy & Primitivo & Red Wine

Via DNA fingerprinting, it has been determined that Primitivo is essentially the same grape as California's Zinfandel, this vintage proves that grape type does not always result in a cookie cutter style.
Although quite palatable, it took me a few sips to lock down the aroma, but once I did, I found it a bit tough to get past it. My intention was to get California Zinfandel for a bargain basement price, but in this case I'll have to keep looking. If you looking for a very earthy, mushroomy, wet hay type of wine, you've just found it.
