Hermanos Lurton Tempranillo 2012

Date September 21, 2015 | Chuck | Red Wine & Spain & Tempranillo

It's big, spanish, has gripping tannins and notes of medium-heavy toasted oak.  My new benchmark Tempranillo.  Alcohol/Vol 15%.  100% Tempranillo.
Update: Discontinued and reduced in price from $16.95 -> $13.95 -> $7.60 (so basically a sane non-Canadian price)

Farnese Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2012

A swing and a miss by the winery of my house wine. With no depth in the nose or on the palate, this wine is very mundane.
It's one of the cheapest reds in the LCBO, so there is that. 12.5%

Red Rock Malbec Reserve 2010

Date December 16, 2012 | Chuck | Malbec & Red Wine & USA

While typically not a fan of malbecs, this one is quite good. I liked the fruit forward characteristics of it - which aren't seen in malbecs from places like South America, making this bottle...very...Californian.
I disagree with the LCBO's sweetness descriptor of Extra Dry. Dry it is, Extra it is not.

Dancing Bull Zinfandel 2010

Date October 6, 2012 | Chuck | Red Wine & USA & Zinfandel

This wine has a great profile however while drinking it I found it lacks mouthfeel and depth. Both key aspects this California Zinfandel lover craves.
I will say Dancing Bull is a good value if you are just getting into zins. (Expect to pay an extra 5 to 6 dollars to get the depth).

35 South Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2009

Date July 15, 2012 | Chuck | Cabernet Sauvignon & Chile & Red Wine

A big, fruit forward, juicy cabernet sauvignon from Chile isn't something I've had in years.  They had a good run in 2007-2008 but it's been an uphill battle ever since.  Was pleasantly surprised with this bottle.
A strong red weighing in at 14.0 %

Even though there isn't a lot going on in the glass, it's not a bad choice at all for casual bbq food. Not sure if this is really LCBO #828 or what I have listed below, the price difference is 4 more dollars.

Camplazens Syrah 2006

Date November 29, 2009 | Chuck | France & Red Wine & Shiraz

At first sip you can tell this is a french wine without even trying.   The LCBO gave this wine a nice writeup but I'll disagree with it.  They saw plenty of blackberry, fruit and spice, I didn't.  They also mention it's 'very drinkable tonight', while I'd cellar it for 2 years.
At least it's 13.5% Alcohol/Vol.

Perez Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2007

Date January 4, 2009 | Chuck | Cabernet Sauvignon & Chile & Red Wine

This is the 2007 vintage of the site favourite 2005. Once finding such a great wine you hope that subsequent years will be on par or better, but this vintage reminds us that grapes and wine are living, breathing, unformulated works - the weather changes from year to year, as does the soil and grapes, making the recipe change and so on.
With all the above said, this is still a good wine, just not as great as previous vintages. You can tell it spent a bit too much time in the barrel and didn't taste as refined as it could be.  Well worth a try if you particularly like french or ontario reds.

Fontanafredda Barbera Briccotondo 2006

Date December 12, 2008 | Chuck | Barbera & Italy & Red Wine

This value barbera coming from Piedmont, Italy is a medium bodied acidic red that proves the time tested fact that Italian wine always matches Italian food. I had this wine with a plate of pasta and meatballs and the wine's acidity matched the acidity in the tomato sauce perfectly. On that note, if you don't usually like Italian reds, this isn't for you.  There was also a hint of eucalyptus in on the palate.

Ironstone Old Vine Zinfandel 2005

Date November 8, 2008 | Chuck | Red Wine & USA & Zinfandel

Take the best notes from Cabernet and Shiraz, add some zip, and you have a great Zinfandel. This old vine release from Ironstone has excellent concentrated fruit flavors and incredible depth. The high alcohol is very well balanced and not at all overpowering. Flavours and aromas are big and chewy.
In Ironstone's case "Old Vine" means the grapes were hand selected from vineyards that are over 45 years old.

Misterio Malbec 2007

Date August 2, 2008 | Chuck | Argentina & Malbec & Red Wine

The destination (Argentina) was right, but this wine wasn't really what I was expecting. The heavy violet aroma and tastes were overkill and not very characteristic, they also tell us the grapes could have used more time to ripen.
The plum and oak notes were nice but the bitter floral finish put me off.

Hillebrand Trius Red 2004

Hillebrand Trius Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Date April 17, 2008 | Chuck | Cabernet Sauvignon & Canada & Red Wine

The Trius cabernet sauvignon is a delicious medium-full bodied, slightly off-dry red that is a great value. Many times we think to ourselves when trying a slightly less expensive wine: "for a couple extra dollars I could have gotten something much better". This is one of those better wines for an extra tooney.
Winemaker's Notes: "Traditional skin contact, subtle French oak integration and full malolactic fermentation produced a wine with a fruit-forward style."

What all means is that the wine is well balanced. You won't find it too oaky, too tannic or too dry.

Goats do Roam 2006

Date March 22, 2008 | Chuck | Red Blend & Red Wine & South Africa

Miguel Torres Santa Digna Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2004

Date March 5, 2008 | Chuck | Cabernet Sauvignon & Chile & Red Wine

Anyone else notice the small Chilean invasion on the site lately? Here's why, good quality, no-frills wine at a fair price, and this cabernet proves the point. You don't have to just take our word for it, the LCBO has labeled this a 'vintages essential'. I think I'm going to assign myself the mission of tasting all the essential picks from the LCBO, it's my mission and I choose to accept it...no...don't stop me, and if I'm not done in a few months, just wait longer :)
This red has a lengthy finish so it's best paired with a hearty meal.

Rocca Delle Macie Chianti Classico 2005

Date February 23, 2008 | Chuck | Chianti & Italy & Red Wine

Chianti is Italy's most famous wine, and rightly so, it's an excellent varietal that goes very well with (surprise) Italian food. The winemakers at Rocca Delle Macie are chianti specialists and this vintage is proof in a bottle. Enjoy it's fruit and oak flavours with a touch of black pepper in it's long dry finish.
Interesting: Try a taste test between normal chianti and chianti classico. See if you can taste the difference between the types due to aging and grape quality. The classico will be much more sophisticated and less table wine like.
Tip: swish this chianti around for 5 seconds to get a hit of black pepper (sans sneeze)

Yellow Tail Merlot 2006

Date February 23, 2008 | Chuck | Australia & Merlot & Red Wine

Yellow Tail....ahhh, the world's top selling brand. Lets begin.
This is definitely a love it or hate it wine, I found it to be in a class on it's own. If you're a typical merlot drinker, you may not like this one. If you're not a typical wine drinker you may love this wine.
This wine has been labeled as being created in the boardroom rather than in the vineyards (translation: that's what the kids call a 'diss', or what adults call an insult). So they try to appease the masses, good business and it shows, hell, they are the first winery I've found to display Nutritional Information.
Tip: open this bottle up for non-winedrinkers, you just may convert them to the dark side ;)
