Megalomaniac Homegrown Riesling VQA 2013

Date June 18, 2015 | Chuck | Canada & Riesling & White Wine

I had no idea this was going to be a sweet riesling but I enjoyed it for a glass and a half regardless.  It was liked by non wine lovers as well.  I would sip this on its own ice cold.  Keeps pretty well for 2 days in the fridge.

Open Riesling-Gewürztraminer 2010

Date August 3, 2011 | Chuck | Canada & Gewürztraminer & Riesling & White Wine

This VQA fuses two great varietals and the outcome is a success in my books since characteristics from both grapes are allowed to shine through. The palette is crisp all around with a slightly sweet yet tart citrus finish.
This bottle was well received by 3 of 3 white wine drinkers at the table.

Pelee Island Gewürztraminer 2009

Date January 31, 2011 | Chuck | Canada & Gewürztraminer & White Wine

If you're looking for a sweeter white wine with loads of honey and pear notes, look no further. Serve this nice and cold but take it easy, as the easy drinking nature hides it's 12.5% alcohol content very well!
This is the non-VQA version, do I mind? nope. Watch for the hint of spice on the finish.

Strewn Riesling Gewürztraminer 2007

Date April 9, 2009 | Chuck | Canada & Gewürztraminer & Riesling & White Wine

This fusion of whites provides a deep bouquet and crisp palette. It's an ok buy, but I would recommend the Pillitteri over it and even Strewn's regular riesling.

D'arenberg The Stump Jump White 2007

Date March 16, 2009 | Sean | Australia & White Blend & White Wine

The thermometer broke the 0 mark this weekend, which means its time to get ready for summer by chilling some white wine. Wanting to ease in to the white wine season I picked a blend hoping for something easy going and well rounded.  This wine certainly achieved this.  Like it's name, it did jump out of the glass, but in a good way.
Comprised of 62% Riesling, 18% Sauvignon Blanc, 8% Marsanne, 6% Viognier and 6% Chardonnay

Spinelli Chardonnay Terre di Chieti

Date August 23, 2008 | Chuck | Chardonnay & Italy & White Wine

So far, Spinelli wines have offered good value for their almost unbeatable prices (by LCBO standards anyways). Here we have an unoaked chardonnay that is crisp and acidic. If you like chardonnay but find it too heavy, give this Italian a try as it doesn't show any hints of oak, butter or vanilla - tell-tale signs that your wine is drowning in wood.
Sean mentioned that this vintage reminded him of the hard cider named Strongbow. I guess my taste and aroma notes are right on.

If you're a die hard fan of the extra crisp and acidic Italian pinot grigios out there, be prepared when you try out this fruit-forward Californian.
This vintage was definitely fun to drink with much of our time spent noses in glass.

Domaine des Aspes Viognier 2006

Date April 29, 2008 | Sean | France & Viognier & White Wine

It was Domaine des Aspes that first got me hooked on Viognier about 2.5 years ago. Viognier (like Riesling) can be produced in a range of styles from reserved and floral to bold and tropical. This particular version from France is well rounded, balanced sweetness against acid with clear citrus and peach.
I can't encourage you enough to try the variety of grape. I turned to it when I just couldn't drink another Chardonnay or Riesling. With its re-emergence in modern wine making this will be the come back kid for the next few years.
Tip: Enjoy on it's own any day of the year.

Vina Carmen Chardonnay 2006

Date April 20, 2008 | Sean | Chardonnay & Chile & White Wine

While many Chardonnays can be really overpowered by oak in the form of vanilla and butter this wine is well balanced and crisp. The finish has a great mild acidity that leaves behind a slight citrus note.
This certainly isn't a fruit salad, but you will notice the apples and pears. A very easy drinking Chardonnay, and for the price a good deal. Very refreshing.

Oyster Bay Chardonnay 2005

Date March 1, 2008 | Chuck | Chardonnay & New Zealand & White Wine

Oyster Bay is a popular choice for the average buyer who feels like splurging a bit [yes, it's a bit pricey], and this chardonnay from New Zealand's Marlborough region is a nice change from the typical chard. If you're used to drinking the chardonnays from North America you may find the majority are quite heavy on the oak, rich and buttery. Love it or hate it, it's the number one selling white varietal in the world. Back to this wine, you find it much lighter because it's only partially barrel fermented and not at all buttery but rather more fruity with a crispiness to it that is very enjoyable.
Another cool method the winemaker chose to preserve the fruitiness of this vintage was the decision to skip out on the cork and use a screw top. They're not taking any chances down under :) If you like this wine, try their Sauvignon Blanc, it's on my to-do list.
